Tyneside
|
|
Britain's earliest industrial district, in northeast England, along both banks of the river Tyne from west of Newcastle to the coast. Its advantages were plentiful coal and easy transport by water to the sea, so that by the early 17C it was supplying most of London's fuel. The region has suffered greatly since the mid-20C from the decline of both mining and heavy industry. It has been since 1974 part of the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear. Those born on Tyneside are known colloquially as *Geordies.
