Wat Tyler

(d. 1381) Leader of the Kentish rebels in the *Peasants' Revolt. His men took Canterbury on 10 June 1381 and the Tower of London four days later. At a meeting with *Richard II at Smithfield, Tyler went so far as to demand the confiscation of all church property. During the argument he was wounded by the Lord Mayor of London, who later had him beheaded.
