The area now known as Marble Arch. From the late 14C it was London's main place of public execution, attracting large crowds in a holiday mood. The gallows (often referred to as Tyburn Tree) stood where Edgware Road joins Oxford Street. They were moved in 1783 to a position outside *Newgate prison.
