(1706–39) The best known of the 18C highwaymen, working mainly round London but eventually hanged in York. The details of his legend – his horse Black Bess, his gallantry, his ride non-stop from London to York – were inventions of the 19C, when he was a popular hero of the *penny dreadfuls.
