(1892–1990, DBE 1962) Dramatic soprano of great power who spent much of her career with the Chicago opera company but was also a star of the Covent Garden seasons from 1928 to 1948. She was known in particular for her performances in Verdi and Wagner, but the single part most strongly associated with her was Puccini's Turandot; she first sang it in Italy in 1926, only months after the premiere at La Scala, and Franco Alfano (the composer who had completed the work after Puccini's death) was said to consider her the ideal performer for the part.
