(1908–87) Dancer and choreographer who pioneered a form of ballet interpreting psychological states. His first works were for Ballet Rambert (The Planets 1934, Jardin aux Lilas 1936, Dark Elegies 1937), but during the war he went as choreographer to the newly formed American Ballet Theatre in New York. It was for them that he created Pillar of Fire (1942) and Romeo and Juliet (1943, to music by Delius). He danced in most of his own ballets.
