Seven emirates in the Persian Gulf which by a series of treaties (or truces, hence the name) became from 1820 steadily more involved with Britain. Broadly speaking the early truces committed them to giving up piracy in return for British protection. Eventually, by a treaty of 1892, Britain undertook to deal with all the foreign affairs of the seven (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al Qaiwain, Ras al Khaimah and Fujairah). The group became fully independent as the United Arab Emirates in 1971, though authority within each emirate remains with the hereditary sheikh.
