Tresco
|
|
One of the *Scilly Isles, notable for Tresco Abbey Gardens – developed round the ruins of a *Benedictine abbey from 1834 by Augustus Smith and his descendants. The climate produced by the *Gulf Stream allows a great many exotic plants to thrive here which could not survive elsewhere in Britain, though an unprecedented spell of frost in January 1987 caused some damage. Ships have been wrecked on the Scillies for centuries, and a collection of their figureheads is displayed in the Valhalla Museum.
