Traquair House
|
|
(48km/30m S of Edinburgh) Claimed to be the oldest inhabited house in Scotland. There is mention of a building here in the early 12C; the present house is mainly of the 17C, but it incorporates a fortified tower of an earlier period. Nowadays Traquair has another claim to fame. Since 1965 beer has been brewed here by traditional methods in an ancient brewhouse. It is available only in small quantities, but Traquair House ale is exported as far afield as Japan and the USA.
