(London WC2) The capital city's largest square with unrestricted access, and therefore the traditional place for meetings of political protest and for New Year revels. It was laid out in 1830–41, on the site of earlier royal stables, as a memorial to the victory at *Trafalgar and with *Nelson's Column as its main feature.
