John Tradescant
|
|
(c.1570–1638) Collector of curiosities and gardener to *Charles I. He brought back large numbers of plants from his travels in Europe, and was responsible for stocking the gardens at *Hatfield. His son, also John (1608–62), followed him as gardener to the king and continued to build up the family collection, which became the basis of the *Ashmolean Museum. The Tradescants lived in Lambeth, south of the river in London, and were buried in St Mary's – which now houses a museum of garden history.
