Townswomen's Guilds
|
|
Organization consisting of some 2000 guilds around Britain, meeting for social activities and functioning as a pressure group on women's issues. The guilds trace their origin to the Kensington Society, a ladies' discussion group established in London in 1865. Votes for women was the main theme of the following decades, and many of the members were *suffragettes. The equal franchise was finally achieved in 1928, and in 1929 the first four guilds on the present pattern were formed. The name Townswomen's Guilds was adopted in 1933.
