Tower Hill
|
|
(London EC3) Rising ground to the north of the *Tower of London, where distinguished 'traitors' were brought from the Tower to be beheaded. Fewer than 100 such executions took place (among them Thomas *More), but each had the importance of a state occasion, watched by large crowds on specially constructed stands. Ordinary criminals were hanged on the other side of town, at *Tyburn.
