(Indian tonic water) Mineral water containing quinine. During the 18–19C quinine was the only known remedy against malaria, and was regularly taken as a protection in infested parts of the British empire. Tonic water, launched by Schweppes in the 1870s, was found to be extremely pleasant with gin and so survives regardless of malaria.
