Timon of Athens
|
|
(c. 1607) Unrelievedly bleak tragedy by *Shakespeare about a rich Athenian who generously gives all his wealth away and is then spurned by his friends. Retiring to a cave to nurse his hatred of mankind, he finds a hoard of gold. The effect of this news on the Athenians does nothing to restore his spirits, and he commits suicide.
