Tiller Girls
|
|
Troupe of British dancers, famous for their precision when high-kicking in a line. From the 1920s several troupes of Tiller girls were regularly touring the world. Their origin was in the Manchester district of *Moss Side, where a rich cotton merchant, John Tiller (1854–1925), organized amateur theatricals for local children. They had their first professional engagement in 1890, when he presented four 10-year-old girls in a Liverpool pantomime. Later Blackpool became the company's base.
