Equestrian competition in which the competitor must ride the same horse on each of three days. The first is concerned with dressage; on the second there are four endurance tests, two of them over roads and tracks, one steeplechase and one cross-country; the third day's contest is showjumping. The event has been included in the *Olympic Games since 1912; there has been a European Championship since 1953 (biennial from 1965) and a World Championship every four years since 1966. In Britain the two most important annual competitions are at *Badminton and *Burghley.
