(1882–1976, DBE 1931) Actress who made her name in Shakespeare – notably at the Old Vic during World War I, where with so many actors away at the front her parts included Puck and even Prince Hal. She also excelled in modern plays, in particular *Saint Joan. She often appeared with her husband, Lewis Casson (1875–1969). The Thorndike Theatre in Leatherhead, Surrey, is named after her.
