Order of the Thistle
|
|
(The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle) The senior *order of chivalry in Scotland, second only to the *Garter in the United Kingdom. It was probably founded by *James III in the 15C and in its present form was revived by Queen *Anne in 1703. The motto, which appears round the thistle in the star of the order, is Nemo me impune lacessit (Latin for 'No-one provokes me with impunity'); the same motto is used by Scottish regiments. Apart from royal members the maximum number of Knights, who place KT after their names, is 16; in 1987 it was made possible for ladies (LT) to be of this number. Since 1911 the order has had its own chapel, designed by Robert Lorimer (1864–1929), in St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh.
