Thirlestane Castle
|
|
(45km/28m SE of Edinburgh) House in which three distinct periods of buildings coexist in an exotic jumble of peaked and turreted roofs. A four-square building of the 1590s (far more gracious than most Scottish castles of the period) acquired an extension by William *Bruce in the 1670s (in which the state rooms are notable for their extravagantly baroque plaster ceilings) and the whole was enlarged in the *Scottish baronial style in the 19C.
