(1949) The most successful film of Carol *Reed, written by Graham *Greene. Set in a shattered Vienna, just after World War II, it follows the efforts of an American author, played by Joseph Cotten, to trace an old friend, the elusive Harry Lime – who turns out to be causing numerous deaths by the drugs he is adulterating. Orson Welles, playing Lime, has only a few scenes (notably a conversation while on Vienna's giant Ferris wheel and a chase in the sewers) but he steals the film. The zither score (by Anton Karas) and the stark photography (Robert Krasker) are also famous features.
