Test matches

International *cricket matches, beginning with one between England and Australia in Melbourne in 1877. The phrase had been coined in 1862 when an England eleven visited Australia and played local teams (often numbering more than 11 players), who were in a real sense being 'tested'. From the Test series of 1882 derives the concept of the *Ashes. The other teams now competing in Tests are India, Pakistan, the West Indies, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and South Africa. A national team visiting a rival country will usually play from three to five Test matches interspersed with games against other teams. The term is also now used in the same sense for international series in *rugby football.
