Telegraph
|
|
The name of two of Britain's leading national newspapers. The Daily Telegraph was launched in 1855 and built a rapid circulation by halving its price after three months to become the first penny paper. It amalgamated in 1937 with the Morning Post, and in 1939 broke with tradition among serious papers by putting news on the front page instead of advertisements (the Guardian followed in 1952 and the Times in 1966). The Telegraph, conservative in its image and policies, has a high reputation for the extent of its news coverage. A sister paper, the Sunday Telegraph, was launched in 1961. In 1987 the two left their grandiose Fleet Street building (completed in 1928) and moved to the Isle of Dogs in London's Docklands. Editions of each are now printed simultaneously in London and at a new plant in Manchester, opened in 1986.
