(d. 1718) Pirate, known as Blackbeard, who in 1717 captured a large French merchant ship and converted her into a man-of-war with 40 guns and a new name, Queen Anne's Revenge. He then terrorized the *Caribbean and the eastern coast of north America, eventually making his base in an inlet in North Carolina, where he had a mutually advantageous arrangement with the governor. He died in a battle with two naval sloops sent down from Virginia.
