(Alan John Percivale Taylor, 1906–90) Historian specializing in European events of the 19–20C, with a particular emphasis on the world wars. His compelling quality as a lecturer was first discovered by television audiences in 1958 through his account of the Russian revolution, spoken in a conversational style straight to the camera. He was also a lively columnist for the Sunday Express and wrote the official biography of his friend and employer (Beaverbrook 1972).
