Tattersalls
|
|
The world's oldest auction house for *thoroughbred racehorses, founded by Richard Tattersall (1724–95). In 1745 he bought a share in Beevor's Horse Repository in London's St Martin's Lane, and in 1766 he set up on his own as Tattersalls Sales at Hyde Park Corner. From 1838 sales were held also at Doncaster and from 1886 at *Newmarket, which has been since 1977 the centre of Tattersalls' activities. Of the ten sales a year at Park Paddocks in Newmarket, the most important are the Houghton sales for yearlings in the autumn.
