(1709–11) Periodical founded by *Steele, which appeared three times a week in the form of a letter or essay supposedly penned in one of several fashionable *coffee houses, whose patrons were the enthusiastic readers. Steele, assisted soon by *Addison (a school friend from *Charterhouse), wrote on a wide variety of topics in a lively and informal manner, with a consistent emphasis on the reasoned and moderate response considered suitable in a gentleman. The paper was *Whig in its politics and Steele brought it to an end when a *Tory administration came to power in 1711, replacing it almost immediately with the non-political *Spectator. The name was revived in 1901 for an illustrated monthly magazine, specializing in social events, which is still published today.
