Stokesay Castle

|
(34km/21m S of Shrewsbury) A rarity for its time, the 13C, in being more of a fortified manor house than a castle. Its most striking feature is the sturdy north tower of about 1240 (stone, with arrow slits) on top of which Lawrence of Ludlow added in the 1290s a projecting timbered storey of comfortable rooms. The Great Hall dates from his time, but the timber-frame gatehouse is an addition of the early 17C.
