The Tablet
|
|
Weekly newspaper launched in 1840 as a voice for Britain's *Roman Catholic community; the first issue contained a letter from Daniel *O'Connell welcoming this new 'channel of communication'. It was founded by a convert, Frederick Lucas, whose intention was to be radical in politics but traditional in religion – an approach still followed, in principle, by the Tablet of the 1990s.
