St Swithin's Day
|
|
A legend, known from at least the 13C, which says that the feast day of St Swithin (July 15), be it dry or wet, will set the pattern for the next 40 days. Swithin was a counsellor to the kings of *Wessex and became bishop of *Winchester in 852. Various attempts have been made to explain the legend. Other countries have similar traditions attached to different saints.
