(21km/13m W of Derby) House built from about 1661 for George Vernon, remarkable for its eccentric combination of styles – thought to be due to Vernon acting as his own architect and discovering more modern fashions during the 30 years of construction. The exterior has a Jacobean appearance, by then about half a century out of date, but the interiors contain the richest display of baroque plasterwork and woodcarving to be seen in any English house of the late 17C. The main woodcarver was Edward Pierce, responsible for the superb staircase. The drawing room has an overmantel by Grinling *Gibbons, and the magnificent ceilings are by James Pettifer and Robert Bradbury.
