(16km/10m S of central Manchester) Largely unchanged early factory community, restored as a working museum. Samuel Greg (1758–1834) built a cotton-spinning mill on the river Bollin in 1784, and over the years followed it with houses for his manager, his adult workers and his own family, together with a counting house, a bakery, a shop, a chapel, a school and an apprentice house for the pauper children who were a major part of his workforce. Here they were brought up under strict supervision and with long working hours, but with provision for health and some education. The buildings survive in beautiful surroundings, and a great water wheel now turns once again to demonstrate the spinning and weaving of cotton on 19C machinery.
