Richard Steele
|
|
(1672–1729, kt 1715) Irish dramatist and essayist who made his career in London. His comedies were in a new sentimental style, a reaction against the cynically amoral (but much more enjoyable) *Restoration comedy. Steele's fame rests now on his founding of the *Tatler in 1709, to be followed by the *Spectator in 1711.
