(1852–1924, kt 1902) Anglo-Irish composer, born in Dublin, known in particular for his numerous works for the voice – operas, choral music and songs. He was also a very influential teacher at a time when British music was experiencing something of a renaissance. In his many years teaching composition at the Royal College of Music (1883–1924), his pupils included *Vaughan Williams, *Holst, *Ireland and *Bliss.
