Upright stones, most often arranged in circles, which are characteristic monuments of the late *Stone Age and the *Bronze Age in western Europe. They are also known as menhirs, from the Breton for 'long stone'. *Stonehenge and *Avebury are the two best-known examples of stone circles in Britain.
