Evening Standard
|
|
London's evening newspaper, descended from the Standard which was founded, also as an evening paper, in 1827. Its greatest period began in 1923 when it was acquired by Lord *Beaverbrook, who employed leading writers and political cartoonists (*Low followed by *Vicky). At that time it was in competition with two evening rivals, the Star (which later closed) and the Evening News. The Standard and the News) eventually merged in the present Evening Standard, which is now part of the *Mail group of newspapers, Beaverbrook's main rivals.
