royal house of Scotland
|
|
The gradual process of unifying *Scotland can be traced back to *Kenneth I in the 9C, but the kingdom was not stable until the 11C when *Malcolm III established a dynasty which lasted for more than 200 years. After the death of *Margaret, the Maid of Norway, there was a hiatus. *Robert the Bruce, distantly related to the royal family, seized the throne and re-established firm government in the early 14C. It was his daughter, Marjorie, who married Walter Stewart. The succession of their son to the throne in 1371, as *Robert II, marked the beginning of the *Stuart dynasty from which the British *royal house descends. It has been traditional in the past to describe Scottish monarchs as the kings or queens 'of Scots' (as in Mary Queen of Scots) rather than of Scotland.
