(1891–1959, kt 1958) Painter of Christian visionary scenes in a highly individual style of primitive realism. His most notable works include the World War I murals at *Burghclere; the scenes of Christ at *Cookham which have brought fame to his native village; and the series deriving from his time as a war artist on the Clyde in the 1940s, ranging from detailed views of the process of shipbuilding to glimpses of the Resurrection at Port Glasgow. He also painted some exceptionally stark images of the nude female body which prefigure the work of Lucian Freud.
