Peter Paul Rubens
|
|
(1577–1640, kt 1630) Flemish painter and diplomat. It was as a diplomat that Rubens spent nearly a year in London (1629–30), negotiating a peace between Spain and England. For this he was knighted by *Charles I on his departure, while he in turn presented the king with a large allegorical painting of Peace and War (now in the National Gallery). Meanwhile it had also been agreed that he would provide his most important contribution to art in Britain – the ceiling for the *Banqueting House in Whitehall. The huge canvases were painted in Antwerp and sent to England.
