(London SE1) Area on the curving bank of the Thames, north of Waterloo Station, which has been a centre for the arts since the Festival of Britain in 1951. In addition to the *Festival Hall, there are two other concert halls (Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room) sharing a building opened in 1967. The exhibition and museum areas are the *Hayward Gallery and the *Museum of the Moving Image, while the performing arts are served by the *National Theatre and the *National Film Theatre. The predominant building material is the concrete of New Brutalism, which gives the whole complex a gloomy quality ill-suited to its purpose.
