(1913) Largely autobiographical novel by D.H. *Lawrence about Paul Morel, whose mother is an ex-schoolteacher and his father a drunken miner. The plot centres on the relationship between Paul, his mother and the other women in his life – the reserved and spiritual Miriam Leivers and Clara Dawes, a married feminist. In his despair after his mother's death he is unable to respond to Miriam's love for him, and turns away, alone, to find a new life.
