(1917–94) Dancer who joined the Vic-Wells Ballet at Sadler's Wells in 1934 and created his first major role, opposite Margot *Fonteyn, in *Ashton's Horoscope (1938). When Helpmann left the Royal Ballet in 1950, Somes became Fonteyn's chief partner in the classics and in ballets created for them (such as *Ondine) until his retirement from dancing roles in 1961; he continued for some years to play acting parts with the company, such as Capulet in MacMillan's *Romeo and Juliet (1965).
