(1912–97, KBE 1971) Hungarian-born British conductor who made a major contribution to the nation's musical life, particularly during his years at Covent Garden (1961–71). His greatest achievement was the high stature of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, of which he was music director 1969–91. He was the first to conduct a complete studio recording of Wagner's Ring (with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1958–64).
