solicitor
|
|
The term for the majority of lawyers in Britain, as distinct from *barristers. Solicitors undertake all the regular legal work of their clients, bringing in barristers only for specialized opinions on the likely outcome of litigation or to plead in the courts on their clients' behalf. Solicitors themselves may also now plead. Until 1994 they had a right to do so only in *magistrates' courts and in the *county courts. But from that year any solicitor fulfilling certain qualifications can plead also in the higher courts.
