solar topee
|
|
Pith helmet with brim and rounded top which has become a caricature attribute of the British as empire builders, protecting pale skin from the blazing sun of the Asian and African colonies. It originated in India, where topi was a Hindi word for a hat; 'solar' merely relates it to the sun.
