(Edinburgh) Body founded in 1780 with purposes similar to the Society of Antiquaries in London. From the start it collected antiquities and manuscripts, and these later formed the nucleus of the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland – now part of the *Royal Museum of Scotland, with which the society is closely connected.
