Snettisham

Village in Norfolk, near the coast north of King's Lynn, where the largest hoard of *Iron Age gold and silver in Britain has been found. A magnificent gold torque or neck ring of the 1st century BC was unearthed by ploughing in 1950, and in 1990 extensive further discoveries were made. Several different hoards in the area yielded 63 torques and bracelets, variously of gold, silver and bronze; these were the characteristic ornaments of the rulers of the *Celtic tribes inhabiting Britain in the centuries before the *Roman invasion, and coins found with the hoards dated the burial of the objects to about 70 BC. The Snettisham treasure is now in the British Museum.
