SmithKline Beecham
|
|
Company formed in 1989 by the merger of two great pharmaceutical enterprises. SmithKline derived originally from a drugstore in Philadelphia, where from 1830 John Smith sold his own preparations as pills; Marlon Kline was a chemist who joined the company in 1875. The Beecham Group was the name from 1945 of the British company whose fortune was based on a similar product, *Beecham's Pills. Beecham achieved a major breakthrough in 1957 when their scientists discovered and isolated the penicillin nucleus 6-APA, making possible a wide new range of semi-synthetic penicillin products.
