(Frederick Edwin Smith, 1872–1930, earl of Birkenhead 1922) Lawyer and Conservative politician, known for most of his life as F.E. Smith and famous for his wit. As attorney general (1915–18) he prosecuted *Casement for treason. His period as lord chancellor (1919–22) was notable for his reform of the laws of land and property.
