Skye

The largest island of the Inner Hebrides, lying just off the northwest coast of Scotland. It is also one of the most scenic, with several peaks of the Cuillin Hills rising above 950m/3120ft. The capital, Portree, is on the east coast and *Dunvegan Castle on an inlet to the northwest. There are several locations on the island associated with its most romantic moment, when Flora *MacDonald smuggled Bonnie Prince Charlie here in disguise. In 1992, among much litigation and controversy, work began to construct a bridge over the narrow channel (about 900m/1000yd) between Skye and the mainland at Kyle of Lochalsh.
